Awon, geboren Antwan Wiggins, ist ein Musiker und Künstler aus Newport News, Virginia, mit Wurzeln in Brooklyn, New York.
Awon ist bekannt für seinen jazzigen, souligen, nostalgischen Hip Hop-Stil der 90er Jahre, während seine Kunst durch seine Erziehung in den 80er Jahren in New York City angetrieben wird. Inspiriert von Keith Haring, Basquiat und Dondi White hat Awon einen Kunststil, der den durcheinandergebrachten Markierungen im Inneren von New Yorker Waggons ähnelt.
Seine Stücke bilden ein Mosaik aus Symbolen und kühnen Mustern, die zum Nachdenken anregen, während Cartoon-Aliens jedes Stück mit einer zum Nachdenken anregenden Geschichte verankern. Die Idee von Awons Werk ist es, Kunst für jede Palette zu kultivieren und dennoch eine Botschaft hinzuzufügen, die jedes Kind oder jeden Erwachsenen erreichen kann.
Die Themen konzentrieren sich auf Science Fiction, Spiritualität und das Leben nach dem Tod. Awon ist Autodidakt im Malen und Illustrieren und er schafft weiterhin Inhalte durch Musik. Er ist der Mitbegründer des Indie-Labels Don’t Sleep Records zusammen mit seinem häufigen Mitarbeiter Phoniks. Mit Millionen von Streams und internationalen Tourneen hat sich Awon einen Platz im Hip Hop gesichert und seine nächste Eroberung verdient einen Platz in der Kunstwelt. Derzeit lebt Awon in Alexandria, Virginia. Er ist mit seinem Musikerkollegen Tiff the Gift verheiratet und hat drei Kinder.
Mit seiner ersten Ausstellung Soulapowa, nimmt er Bezug auf sein letztes Album, und kreiert zusammen mit der Berliner Galerie "Silber & Salz" einen Raum, der Platz bietet für sein Gesamtkunstwerk. Hip Hop & Kunst. Die Ausstellung findet im Rahmen seiner Europe Tour statt und wird am 19.08. zusammen mit Awon eröffnet.
Awon, born Antwan Wiggins, is a musician and artist from Newport News, Virginia with roots in Brooklyn, New York.
Awon is known for his jazzy, soulful, 90s nostalgic style of Hip Hop, while his art is impelled by his upbringing during the 80s in New York City. Inspired by Keith Haring, Basquiat, and Dondi White, Awon has a style of art that resembles the jumbled tags on the inside of New York City train cars.
His pieces create a mosaic of symbols and bold patterns that promote thought, while cartoon aliens anchor each piece with a thought provoking story. The idea of Awon’s work is to cultivate art for any pallet yet add a message that can reach any child or adult. The themes are centered around science fiction, spirituality, and the afterlife.
Awon is self-taught in painting and illustrating and he continues creating content through music. He is the co-founder of the indie label, Don’t Sleep Records along with his frequent collaborator, Phoniks. With millions of streams and international tours under his belt, Awon has solidified himself a place in Hip Hop and his next conquest is earning a place in the art world. Currently Awon resides in Alexandria, Virginia. He is married to fellow musician Tiff the Gift and has three children.
With his first exhibition, Soulapowa, themed after his latest album. Together with the Berlin gallery "Silber & Salz" Awon creates space themed works of art. The exhibition of Hip Hop and art takes place as part of his European Tour and will take place on 19th of August with Awon in Berlin!
